Gijón
A city open to the sea, with two marinas and ten beaches
With a pronounced maritime character, Gijón offers a wide range of attractions that draw visitors from all over the world. They include the Laboral City of Culture, museums, water sports on the beaches, cider bars, restaurants, the aquarium, the Talasoponiente aquatic leisure park, the Atlantic Botanical Gardens, and the Santa Catalina hill, topped by Chillida's famous sculpture "Elogio del Horizonte", and are complemented by an excellent choice of accommodation in the capital of the Costa Verde.
Steeped in history
The city dates back over 2,000 years and its history is one of its greatest attractions. The influence of its past can be seen in its monuments, streets, buildings, stately homes, gastronomy, maritime atmosphere and the joviality of its inhabitants. The site was originally a Roman settlement. Thanks to the port developed by the Catholic Monarchs, the city began to expand in the sixteenth century; its growth accelerated during the Enlightenment, largely because of the support of figures such as Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos.
Ideal for getting to know Asturias
The largest and most populous city in Asturias is a perfect reflection of the Principality's personality. Natural green spaces abound and the parks, golf courses, picnic areas and natural spaces one can visit without leaving the city are a clear indication that Gijón is at the heart of Asturias. From a transport point of view, Gijón is ideally located to visit other parts of Asturias and discover its culture and wealth of natural beauty. There is a railway station, a bus terminus and a dense road network, while the Asturias airport is less than 40 km from the city.
Superb beaches
Gijón's beaches connect so you can walk along them all from end to end dipping your feet in the waters of the Cantabrian Sea. The best known and most centrally located are the San Lorenzo and Poniente beaches, separated by the marina and by the old part of the city, Cimadevilla, in Santa Catalina. With their golden sand, sea breezes and peaceful atmosphere, these are two of the most popular beaches on the Costa Verde.
