Gijón
A city open to the sea, with two marinas and ten beaches
With a pronounced maritime character, Gijón offers a wide range of attractions that draw visitors from all over the world. Steeped in history
The city dates back over 2,000 years and its history is one of its greatest attractions. The influence of its past can be seen in its monuments, streets, buildings, stately homes, gastronomy, maritime atmosphere and the joviality of its inhabitants. The site was originally a Roman settlement. Thanks to the port developed by the Catholic Monarchs, the city began to expand in the sixteenth century; its growth accelerated during the Enlightenment, largely because of the support of figures such as Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos.

Superb beaches
Gijón's beaches connect so you can walk along them all from end to end dipping your feet in the waters of the Cantabrian Sea. The best known and most centrally located are the San Lorenzo and Poniente beaches, separated by the marina and by the old part of the city, Cimadevilla, in Santa Catalina. With their golden sand, sea breezes and peaceful atmosphere, these are two of the most popular beaches on the Costa Verde.
